Wise Words from Musicians – Lesley Gore

“As far as I’m concerned, collaboration is the essence of life. It’s wonderful to be able to have talents, and, very often, we think that we know what our talents are, or we find out through a back door that we have a talent. I know that I found out I was a lyricist quite through a back door.” – Lesley Gore

Wise Words from Musicians – Dolly Parton

“When I wake up, I expect things to be good. If they’re not, then I try to set about trying to make them as good as I can ’cause I know I’m gonna have to live that day anyway. So why not try to make the most of it if you can? Some days, they pan out a little better than others, but you still gotta always just try.” – Dolly Parton

Wise Words From Musicians – George Harrison

“It’s being here now that’s important. There’s no past and there’s no future. Time is a very misleading thing. All there is ever, is the now. We can gain experience from the past, but we can’t relive it; and we can hope for the future, but we don’t know if there is one.” – George Harrison

How To Shop For Food Ethically

Every time you’re spending money on something, you’re making a vote. If you favour organic produce you’re voting for environmental sustainability. Maybe you buy fair trade and by doing so you’re voting for human rights. Do your research about the businesses whose products you buy and withdraw your support from the ones whose ethos you don’t agree with. Every little purchase counts, so here are some words to look out for to be an ethical food consumer.   Fair trade Fair trade aims to provide better working conditions and fair prices for farmers and farm workers. The most common products are bananas, coffee, tea, chocolate, cotton and sugar.   Organic Organic is supposed to mean that the produce has been grown naturally without the use of pesticides or chemical fertilisers. Sadly, there are loopholes when it comes to labelling produce as organic. A lot of organic nurseries can use chemical pesticides and still be called organic. Vegetables grown in vermiculite rather than soil can’t be labelled as organic even if no chemical pesticides are used to grow them. If you want to buy pesticide free, make sure that pesticide free is specified on the produce. Organic doesn’t necessarily mean free […]

Happy Facts

Squirrels forgetting where they put their nuts, results in thousands of new trees each year.   Scientists have found that daydreaming increases our creativity and ability to create solutions and ideas. That’s good news because we daydream approximately 47% of our waking hours!   There is an uninhabited island in the Bahamas called Big Major Cay, also known as Big Beach, which is populated by swimming feral pigs.   Sunshine is full of Vitamin D and boosts levels of serotonin. Regular sun exposure can help with depression, heart disease, brittle bones, tooth cavities, and in moderation, many common cancers!   The Beatles used the word “love” 613 times throughout their career.   The furry tufts on the inside of cats’ ears are called ear furnishings.   Napping a few times a week helps us to live longer.   The moon is made of 6% silver!   Gentoo penguins propose to their lifemates with a pebble.   Endorphins are released when you smile, these neurotransmitters are responsible for making us feel happy, and helping lower stress levels. Fake smiling has exactly the same effect.       Chloë Owens and Chiaki L’Argent

21 Plants That Help Save Bees

Spring has sprung, and it’s the perfect time to think about what we can plant to help save our bees. Bee colonies are dramatically disappearing, in fact some bumblebee species in the UK have become extinct already. Over the past 50 years, we’ve lost 50%! Bees are essential in pollinating the crops that form our food, and also the wild plants that grow across the country and provide food for much of our wildlife. Without our busy little pollinators, life as we know it would be drastically altered. Let’s work together to stop what will be a catastrophic natural disaster by doing as much we can to help these beautiful creatures numbers increase. Putting up bee hives and houses, buying and growing organic and pesticide free food, and planting the right plants are all positive things we can do, and encourage others to do the same!   We love this illustration by Hannah Rosengren which shows 21 plants we can grow to help save bees, if you don’t have a garden, try planting on windowsills.     Spread the message with Hannah’s screen printed eco-friendly tote bag! Available to purchase here.       Tip: If you ever see a bee lying on the ground, […]

Wise Words From Musicians – Jim Morrison

“The most important kind of freedom is to be what you really are. You trade in your reality for a role. You trade in your sense for an act. You give up your ability to feel, and in exchange, put on a mask. There can’t be any large-scale revolution until there’s a personal revolution, on an individual level. It’s got to happen inside first.” – Jim Morrison

15 Self Love Habits

Most of us find it difficult to prioritise self care. We get wrapped up in everything that’s going on outside of ourselves and forget to show ourselves the love and respect we deserve. Don’t spend your life mistreating yourself. It’s crucial to our well-being to regularly remove external distractions and just be with ourselves to bring us back to our core. Practise these self love habits and we guarantee that you will fall in love with yourself.   1. Stop beating yourself up about mistakes. Learn from them, forgive yourself and move on.   2. Free yourself from toxic relationships. Sometimes it can be difficult to tell if someone is having a negative effect on you, so take time to thoroughly analyse your relationships. You need people in your life who lift you up, not bring you down.   3. Choose a self affirming mantra that works for you, such as “I trust myself” or “I am good enough”.   4. Write a list of things that you love about yourself. Bonus points if you share the list publicly.   5. Always be kind to yourself. You’re doing the best you can and you’re making progress every day.   6. […]

BIBELOT JUKEBOX NO. 1 – ‘HAPPINESS’

What is happiness? Like most emotions, it’s long been a favourite subject in popular music but opinions vary widely as to its nature. Donovan said ‘Happiness Runs’, John Lennon and the Beatles claimed it was ‘a Warm Gun'(!) Garbage were notoriously ‘Only Happy When it Rains’, whilst the late, and most certainly large, Demis Roussos was simply ‘Happy to be on an Island in the Sun’. Go figure. What concerns us in this top ten playlist, are records that conjure up a good feeling and get close to the spirit of wellbeing. Sometimes it’s the song, sometimes an exuberant performance – if we’re lucky, it’s both at once. We hope some of the ditties in this little round-up bring a smile to yer face – as well as a tingle to yer toes! We kick off with an old favourite that’s certainly stood the test of time. There’s instant sunshine in that there chorus! 1. THE TURTLES – Happy Together   And talkin’ of timeless, here’s an evergreen from the ever danceable Godfather of funk… 2. JAMES BROWN with the FAMOUS FLAMES – I Got You (I Feel Good)   Australia’s finest musical export promised a, presumably lucky lady, lasting […]
