Bibelot’s Favourite Places to Eat Vegan

It’s meat-free Monday! Giving up meat for just one day a week has a profoundly positive affect on our planet, and our health. Limp lettuce and tasteless tofu are thankfully a thing of the past! And for those of you who choose to eat ethically as a way of life, or are trying to reduce the meat intake in your diet, it’s never been easier. It’s also never been easier to enjoy a meal out, with new vegetarian and vegan restaurants popping up all over the place, and other restaurants adding meat-free options to their menus. It does not necessarily mean that your favorite restaurant will stop serving you favorite sausages in dcw casings. You should just know that there are some other options to have healthy and substantial meal. Here’s a list of some of our favourite places to grab a delicious plate of vegan food in London.   Dig in!   Mildred’s Originally just based in soho, Mildred’s have recently opened another restaurant in Camden, and now you can book in advance. The menu has a diverse selection of delectable vegetarian and vegan dishes, with a good mixture of both healthy and naughty (heavenly chocolate cake, we’re looking at you) […]

5 Amazing TV Shows You Might Not Have Heard Of

The Prisoner British mystery drama series (1967-1968) A recently resigned secret agent is abducted and taken to a place that he can’t escape from, with no knowledge of why this is happening to him. He’s assigned a number; Number Six, and no one is willing to answer his questions. His guards try everything to get information out of him but he gives them nothing. He repeatedly tries to escape and to get hold of the person in charge; Number One, but to no avail. The beautiful exteriors were filmed in the Portmeirion village near Porthmadog, North Wales, which adds to the surreal feel. If you’ve never seen Patrick McGoohan’s cult series, get ready for a binge watch as you’ll be dying for answers. It’s Kafkaesque satire at its best.       The League American comedy series (2009-2015) The plot revolves around six friends based in Chicago who are obsessively passionate about their fantasy football league, but don’t let that put you off if you’re not into sports! This show is semi-scripted, as in there’s a story outline and the rest is improv. It’s a joy to watch Nick Kroll, Jason Mantzoukas and Paul Scheer do improv so exceptionally […]

Illustrated Ceramics

Over the past few years, to counteract the rise in the use of digital technology in the industry, all areas of design have seen a resurgence of old fashioned skills and mediums as artists yearn for the artistic satisfaction that only hand-dirtying techniques can bring. A particularly exciting strand of this new old-fashioned craze has been the rise of illustrated ceramics. Artists all over the world, both emerging and established, have taken time out to mould, fire and glaze stunning creations which both bring character-filled focus points to a room or outfit and prove what a diverse and contemporary medium ceramic art is. Below is a list of five artists who’s transitions from illustrator to ceramic artist have been seamless and inspiring:   Sandra Dieckmann  For Sandra Dieckmann, who is known for her intricate artworks depicting nature in all its glory, her experimentation with this potentially spectacular medium has meant setting aside some of her infamous detail and adapting her approach for a 3 dimensional medium whilst attempting to keep the magical quality her creations are known for. Her adorable clay-creations have proved a huge hit with admirers online, with cute creatures such as Augustine the Hedgehog selling out in […]

Paper Only – Review

Paper Only by The Papered Parlour includes 20 varied and beautifully written tutorials teaching you how to make everything from delicate paper roses and wreaths, to printed wrapping paper and origami bows. Since being founded in 2009, The Papered Parlour has hosted experimental workshops, critically acclaimed masterclasses and mini festivals, welcoming thousands of participants to their craft-centric events. Their passion for crafting, and adoration for paper and its versatility, shines through on each page of Paper Only. With this, their debut book, The Papered Parlour endeavoured to create more than just a craft book – they wanted to create a book about creativity, pushing the boundaries of paper-craft whilst simultaneously encouraging creativity. Below is a list of five reasons which make Paper Only much more than your average craft book:     1. Personality Unlike some books, the goal is not to create exactly what is on the page but rather to adopt The Papered Parlour’s messy, carefree way of working; take some artistic risks, experiment, let your artistic flare go wild and see what happens! This experimental approach injects excitement into each challenge and means that 20 tasks can in fact create an endless amount of unique, personality-filled crafted […]

Flying Eye Books

From imaginative story books and titles with a focus on education, to those which effortlessly weave information and narrative together – Flying Eye Books are varied, intelligent and incredibly beautiful! Whilst the target market for this imprint of Nobrow Press is undeniably children, there is no reason that Flying Eye Books can not be enjoyed just as much, if not more, by adults. After all, the publisher has produced a plethora of innovative and stunning titles – and why should children have all the fun?! Flying Eye Books have countless amazing qualities which make them appeal to a wide audience; they often have a moral, but don’t feel the need to slap you around the face with it. They tell short stories, not stupid ones, and the artwork within them is produced by some of the worlds best illustrators. Below is a list of some of my favourite Flying Eye Books and the reasons why they are perfect for an adult audience.     Wild by Emily Hughes Wondrous, witty and uncontrollably wild, Emily Hughes debut Flying Eye Book tells the story of a little girl who knows nothing but nature from birth. The buzz around Wild – and Emily’s second title […]

6 Fantastic Documentaries

Dig! (2004) A music documentary covering seven years of the friendship and rivalry between the singers of the American rock bands The Dandy Warhols and The Brian Jonestown Massacre. Courtney Taylor-Taylor and Anton Newcombe are both very interesting men with big egos which end up clashing when the Dandies reach commercial success. Anton is the real star of this documentary. He’s all the negative stereotypes of rock musicians come to life. This is one of the best documentaries I’ve ever seen and I cannot recommend it highly enough. Grey Gardens (1975) The aunt and cousin of Jackie Kennedy live a reclusive life in a decaying 14-room East Hampton mansion full of fleas, cats, raccoons, animal feces and rubbish. We learn that Big Edie and Little Edie are both very eccentric yet loveable characters as they perform, bicker and tell the stories of their lives. It’s gripping and sad, but also oddly liberating seeing these fabulous ladies turning their back on society and living life according to their own rules. The Imposter (2012) A 13-year-old boy goes missing in Texas. Three years later his family get a phone call from a young Frenchman in Spain who claims to be their son. […]

Psychedelic Animations

Fantastic Planet – 1973 Set in an an eerie and dystopian futuristic world ruled by a race of giant blue skinned aliens, called Draags, oppressed human beings, known as Oms, are kept as pets, or live ferel and scrape for survival. The Oms are generally seen as vermin that must be periodically controlled.  The film, by René Laloux and Roland Topor, opens in an unsettling scene, with an Om mother, cradling her baby in her arms, running from a group of Draag children, who tease her during play, until her death. The orphaned baby Om is rescued by a young Draag girl, Tiva, and her father, Master Singh, gives her permission to keep the infant as a pet.  We follow the child, named Terr by his captor, as he grows, learns more about the Draag community by witnessing their strange mediation sessions that are an integral part of Draag society, and devises a plan for humanity to escape.  The animation is strange and compelling, the Salvador-Dali-meets-Terry-Gilliam setting combined with a haunting and psychedelic soundtrack, with a dream-like and at times, thought provoking sci-fi story has enabled the film to retain a place in cult film history.       The […]

15 Self Love Habits

Most of us find it difficult to prioritise self care. We get wrapped up in everything that’s going on outside of ourselves and forget to show ourselves the love and respect we deserve. Don’t spend your life mistreating yourself. It’s crucial to our well-being to regularly remove external distractions and just be with ourselves to bring us back to our core. Practise these self love habits and we guarantee that you will fall in love with yourself.   1. Stop beating yourself up about mistakes. Learn from them, forgive yourself and move on.   2. Free yourself from toxic relationships. Sometimes it can be difficult to tell if someone is having a negative effect on you, so take time to thoroughly analyse your relationships. You need people in your life who lift you up, not bring you down.   3. Choose a self affirming mantra that works for you, such as “I trust myself” or “I am good enough”.   4. Write a list of things that you love about yourself. Bonus points if you share the list publicly.   5. Always be kind to yourself. You’re doing the best you can and you’re making progress every day.   6. […]

Get involved on the Earwolf message boards suggesting future films, and enjoy the backlog of all 108 episodes currently available.       Stuff You Should Know Have you ever wanted to know how a Slinky works? Bibelot’s favourite cruelty free beauty brands

Most of us would prefer to buy cruelty free beauty products, but sometimes people just don’t have time to research every brand before buying. The problem is, due to a loophole in the law, some brands can call themselves “cruelty-free” if they don’t test their finished products on animals, but can still buy ingredients from suppliers who conduct animal testing. Some cruelty free brands are owned by bigger brands who test on animals. There are mixed feelings on this; Some people prefer to boycott these brands completely, some people believe that it sets a good example to parent companies, encouraging them to believe cruelty free is the right way to go. We have shared our favourites in this cruelty free list. We do recommend doing some of your own research too, because there are many more out there you might not know about!         ♥ Vegan ♦ Subsidiary of a parent company that does not comply   Barry M (Some products are not vegan, but all are vegetarian) Crabtree & Evelyn (Some products contain animal products) Gosh Cosmetics (Some products are not vegan, but all are vegetarian) The Body Shop ♦ (owned by Loreal, who is not cruelty free) Beauty Without […]

Birds that mate for life

Bald Eagle The national emblem of the United States, these birds have an impressive wingspan of 6-7 feet. They stick together for life, except in the event of their partner’s death – or impotency. They choose the tops of large trees to build nests, which they typically use and enlarge each year – nests can reach 10 feet across and weigh a half ton! Barn Owl Creatures of habit, they spend a lot of time at home, and like to stick to a strict routine in their daily comings and goings. They have impeccable hearing – it’s said that a Barn Owl can actually hear a mouse’s heartbeat in a 30ft sq room! Courtship involves the male bringing the female food, and copulation usually takes place with every gift of food! But it’s not all about food and sex, most pairs also engage in mutual preening, cheek rubbing and meaningful conversation – they “talk” to each other in the nest making a wide variety of soft chittering and hissing calls. Laysan Albatross These birds live in open ocean waters and wander the skies above, only returning to land when they’re ready to “find love” at the age of 6 or 7. […]
