5 Amazing TV Shows You Might Not Have Heard Of

The Prisoner British mystery drama series (1967-1968) A recently resigned secret agent is abducted and taken to a place that he can’t escape from, with no knowledge of why this is happening to him. He’s assigned a number; Number Six, and no one is willing to answer his questions. His guards try everything to get information out of him but he gives them nothing. He repeatedly tries to escape and to get hold of the person in charge; Number One, but to no avail. The beautiful exteriors were filmed in the Portmeirion village near Porthmadog, North Wales, which adds to the surreal feel. If you’ve never seen Patrick McGoohan’s cult series, get ready for a binge watch as you’ll be dying for answers. It’s Kafkaesque satire at its best.       The League American comedy series (2009-2015) The plot revolves around six friends based in Chicago who are obsessively passionate about their fantasy football league, but don’t let that put you off if you’re not into sports! This show is semi-scripted, as in there’s a story outline and the rest is improv. It’s a joy to watch Nick Kroll, Jason Mantzoukas and Paul Scheer do improv so exceptionally […]

6 Fantastic Documentaries

Dig! (2004) A music documentary covering seven years of the friendship and rivalry between the singers of the American rock bands The Dandy Warhols and The Brian Jonestown Massacre. Courtney Taylor-Taylor and Anton Newcombe are both very interesting men with big egos which end up clashing when the Dandies reach commercial success. Anton is the real star of this documentary. He’s all the negative stereotypes of rock musicians come to life. This is one of the best documentaries I’ve ever seen and I cannot recommend it highly enough. Grey Gardens (1975) The aunt and cousin of Jackie Kennedy live a reclusive life in a decaying 14-room East Hampton mansion full of fleas, cats, raccoons, animal feces and rubbish. We learn that Big Edie and Little Edie are both very eccentric yet loveable characters as they perform, bicker and tell the stories of their lives. It’s gripping and sad, but also oddly liberating seeing these fabulous ladies turning their back on society and living life according to their own rules. The Imposter (2012) A 13-year-old boy goes missing in Texas. Three years later his family get a phone call from a young Frenchman in Spain who claims to be their son. […]

Psychedelic Animations

Fantastic Planet – 1973 Set in an an eerie and dystopian futuristic world ruled by a race of giant blue skinned aliens, called Draags, oppressed human beings, known as Oms, are kept as pets, or live ferel and scrape for survival. The Oms are generally seen as vermin that must be periodically controlled.  The film, by René Laloux and Roland Topor, opens in an unsettling scene, with an Om mother, cradling her baby in her arms, running from a group of Draag children, who tease her during play, until her death. The orphaned baby Om is rescued by a young Draag girl, Tiva, and her father, Master Singh, gives her permission to keep the infant as a pet.  We follow the child, named Terr by his captor, as he grows, learns more about the Draag community by witnessing their strange mediation sessions that are an integral part of Draag society, and devises a plan for humanity to escape.  The animation is strange and compelling, the Salvador-Dali-meets-Terry-Gilliam setting combined with a haunting and psychedelic soundtrack, with a dream-like and at times, thought provoking sci-fi story has enabled the film to retain a place in cult film history.       The […]

Satirical comedies

Bedazzled United Kingdom (1967) Stanley is about to take his life when George Spiggott aka the Devil turns up and proposes that Stanley can have seven wishes in exchange for his soul. All Stanley wants is for the waitress he works with to fall in love with him. One after the other, the wishes go wrong. Peter Cook and Dudley Moore is one of the most hilarious comedy duos of all times, and this is without any doubt the the most hilarious film ever made. The costume design is gorgeous and the musical score by Dudley Moore is pure perfection.         Delicatessen France (1991) In this post-apocalyptic fantasy where food is rare, the landlord of an apartment building hires handymen only to kill them and serve them to his tenants. Desperate times call for desperate measures. The soundtrack is fantastic, but make sure you pay attention to fully appreciate it. Jean-Pierre Jeunet has such a distinctive colour palette and a wonderful feeling for quirky characters. If you love Amélie, you’ll love this surrealistic masterpiece.         Dogtooth (Kynodontas) Greece (2009) Locked up in an isolated country house, three teenagers are taught to fear the […]
