Goodwood Revival 2015

When heading to a vintage event and trying to seek the correct bus stop in a strange place, look to the dazzling, pin-curled dame who strolls passed you, purposefully turning a corner. Follow that white rabbit, and she will lead you to where you want to go. Such as it was when, last weekend, we set off on a Bibelot Day Out, to this years’ Goodwood Revival. Around that corner was a fleet of gleaming vintage buses awaiting us. Now we KNEW that we were in the right place! A few minutes later we had most definitely arrived, there was no mistake; we could see cars, hear cars, smell cars. But there was also something else that hit us. There was STYLE.       Each year Goodwood in West Sussex is taken back in time, the racetrack screaming under thousands of vintage cars, while the pedestrian paths are transformed in to catwalk runways. Visitors are dressed in their vintage finest, and enjoy races, music and style-watching, all over a jolly weekend! If you are new to Goodwood be warned; the atmosphere is unlike anything else, the sound of thousands of engines growling, champagne glasses clinking, jive music floating from […]

Super Queenie Retro – Interview + Competition!

Jessie Dodd has spent ten years honing her eagle eye for unique vintage clothes and accessories in order to bring you the very best. Her thriving online store Super Queenie Retro prides itself on providing ‘Vintage for the modern world’, and is a real family business, with husband Tim and daughter Pearl frequently inspiring blog posts and even modelling items from the shop! Super Queenie staples include floral dresses that pack a punch, leather bags fit for a festival and denim delights galore. Jessie shares what she’s learned about running a business – and tight gold lame trousers – with Bibelot.       1. How did Super Queenie Retro come about… And what’s behind the name? It’s hard to believe but I have been selling vintage for over ten years! When I was 21, I jumped headfirst into having my own shop, RubyRumba, in Norwich. While having a ball and living in my own vintage fantasy land, it was also a steep learning curve in how not to run a business, and I ended up very broke and with my shop dreams shattered.Super Queenie Retro is my second vintage baby, it started a few years ago, and it’s taken time […]

Oxfam Online: The Bibelot Edit

My favourite kind of shopping is charity shop shopping. You never know what you’re going to find. It’s unknown as to what items of clothing are going to spark your imagination and what knick-knacks you just have to go home with! Now Oxfam are giving you the opportunity to browse through gorgeous clothes, rare records, books and kick- knacks with their revamped online shop. Pair the hundreds of unique items with the organisational skill of e-commerce and you are able to seek out treasure at your leisure. If you are looking for a certain brand or designer, there’s a handy search bar to write something specific and you can refine any search by price, relevance and colour. An added bonus is the curated trend selections made by the team at Oxfam Online. They are presented on the homepage of the ‘Shop online’ section of the website, a favourite being the current focus on vintage garments from the 1970’s. Shopping second-hand or vintage means that not everything is handed to you on a plate. I find high street shops tend to organise by colour and have already built up the outfits for you to slip into. But where’s the fun in that? Here at […]

Play Purse – Interview + Competition!

Sometimes a product takes on a life of its own! The star of the Item No design collection was an adult-sized version of a childhood favourite – the colourful beaded purse we kept our pocket money in. The breakaway piece is going from strength to strength, with an ever-expanding range of sizes and hues. The London-based designer behind the brainwave talks nostalgia, cracker toys and stylish dolls with Bibelot.   1. Tell us about the story and inspiration behind Play Purse. When I was little I only ever wanted to go to the gift shop, never the actual museum. And when I was six I stole a Troll Doll from someone at school and told my mum that I had found it at the bottom of my bed when I woke up in the morning. She seemed to believe me. I was totally drawn to novelties and souvenirs, vending machine toys and cracker prizes. That aesthetic has stayed with me and has been the inspiration behind Play Purse. Play Purse started off as No. 5 in an ongoing design collection called Item No (itemno.co.uk) but broke off as its own project. Item No. 4 is a watch-strap style leather cuff printed with the picture […]

Tatty Bits – Interview

Cara McDonagh set up her vintage homeward business, Tatty Bits, to rescue us from mass-produced furniture and dull decorations. She haunts car boot sales to find pieces in need of some TLC and then lovingly restores them at home. Her online store features quirky china, kitsch tins and toasty old-fashioned tea-cosies. Bibelot sits down for a cuppa with Cara (from stylish cups, naturally) to discuss our collective obsession with all things retro, and the importance of a supportive cat.   1. How did Tatty Bits come about? Tatty Bits came about because my obsession with all things ‘old’ was getting out of hand. I also loved visiting vintage fairs and thought ‘I could do that!’ but as I’ve discovered it’s not as easy as it looks and is a lot of hard work. Thankfully I still really enjoy it.   2. What would be a good starter project for someone who has never up-cycled before? Pick something small and manageable that is structurally sound. Items like footstools laundry bins or sewing boxes are good, and often don’t involve complicated upholstery. Don’t think you’ve got to completely overhaul a piece of furniture, sometimes a really good clean and a coat of wax […]

Nesting – Rachel Mansi

Just like birds and their nests, people and their homes come in all shapes and sizes. From minimalist modern white cubes to frill-filled country cottages, we all have very personal ideas about what kind of spaces we want to inhabit, and different challenges to face when trying to create our perfect home. On paper I probably look like a pretty conventional person – 40, married, 2 kids, a dog…but my early years were, compared to most people I know, quite wild and bohemian. I lived with my young single Mum in an assortment of shared houses and communes, moving house and school often…home became wherever my stuff was, so in a way my stuff became my home. My mum called me her little magpie, because I kept a little pile of shiny treasures and jewellery from jumble sales under my pillow…every morning it would have all fallen down the back of my bed and I’d root it all out and arrange it again in a little round pile, the size and shape of a birds nest.  My treasure was watched over by a random collection of cuddly toys, some handmade by my Mum, some from jumble sales, and a one-eyed […]

A Curious World

I’m Anna Lewis, a vintage dealer at The Nostalgia Exchange, my mother is an antique dealer, I was brought up surrounded by antiques and vintage wares so my love for this curious world has grown and grown over the years. My market stall is a way of life, combined with a full time job but working hard on the dream to one day soon do this full time, I incorporate it into my trips away as much as possible – the local flea markets always carefully researched before setting foot in any European city, charity shops clocked on every English high street and even in India I managed to source a treasure trove of vintage wares on a dusty, charming street in Mumbai.     Here are some flea market finds:     Early mornings are a given, to find the treasures you have to be up with the lark. In the winter that can mean turning up in a frosty field, layered up like a Michelin Man, sporting a head torch and delving through boxes in the dark. Most friends think I am mad, I probably am, but if I stayed tucked up in bed I wouldn’t get the […]
