Silver Screen Suppers – David Niven’s Christmas Rice Pudding

In 1967 actor David Niven was asked for his favourite festive recipes for a newspaper article.  As David’s second wife was Swedish, he explained their British/Swedish Christmas fare as follows, “Traditionally we have Swedish food on Christmas Eve and toast each other with mugs of glögg. After doing the whole Swedish bit, we celebrate Christmas Day with a typical English dinner of turkey and plum pudding. We wind up tons heavier, not speaking to anyone.”   I know the feeling David!  It’s all on the way very soon…     One of the recipes David shared with food writer Johnna Blinn was this lovely rice pudding.  Traditionally eaten at Christmastime in Sweden I made a vegan version for Bibelot and it was absolutely delicious.  Don’t forget to add the single almond!       David Niven’s Julgrot (Christmas rice pudding)   Ingredients: 1 cup long-grain rice 2 tablespoons vegan butter 1 cup water 5.5 cups plant milk Two pieces of cinnamon stick, each about 1.5 inches long 1 tsp. salt Scant tablespoon of sugar 1 almond   Method: Scald rice with boiling water. Melt half the amount of butter, add to rice and water. Boil for 15 minutes (or until water is absorbed.) […]

Silver Screen Suppers: Cooking With Colombo – Book Review

I’ll start by admitting I’m nowhere close to the Columbo super-fan level of author Jenny Hammerton. But as a food lover, vintage hoarder and a 90s’ schoolchild who grew up on retro cop show re-runs, I couldn’t be more excited to receive my copy of Cooking With Columbo: Suppers with the Shambling Sleuth. First impressions didn’t disappoint – there’s a recipe for every occasion, palate and memorable Columbo episode. Although I was sold on the concept, the only true way to review a cookbook is to try a recipe. So with a Saturday night gathering ahead of me, I set to work finding my ideal dish. It took a while to decide given the impressive range within the book, but I eventually settled on Tyne Daly’s Key Lime Pie, from the 1992 episode A Bird In The Hand. As I say, the later Columbo series are very much my era, and with guests who’ve travelled the USA, this felt like an appropriate all-American classic. Having never made Key Lime Pie before, it was also a good test of Jenny’s recipe writing skills. The first thing that struck me was how cost-effective this dish was to make. With butter, sugar and […]

Silver Screen Suppers – Priscilla Lane’s Popcorn Balls

Film archivist and food lover Jenny Hammerton suggests the perfect dish to accompany your screening of a Hollywood classic. Simply follow the recipe to enjoy a dinner with a twist and dine like a star.     “What Actors Eat – When They Eat” is such a genius title for a book.  Were the authors suggesting that actors never really had time to eat?  Or that they weren’t particularly interested in food?  Or that they were usually on a diet?  I’m guessing the latter, for when this book was published in 1939, screen stars were slim, slim, slim. In the 1930s ordinary mortals looked up to movie stars. Fan magazines were full of details about what the denizens of Hollywood were wearing, what nightclubs they were going to, who they were dating, and what they were eating.  Rex Lease and Kenneth Harlen, two actors of the day, decided to gather together favourite recipes from their film star friends, and published a very lovely cookbook. There are plenty of odd sounding recipes here.  Marie Wilson offers “Rice Birds on Toast”, John Payne proposes “Royal Stuffed Tongue” and Olivia De Havilland suggests “Baked Carrot Ring Filled With Peas”.  Things that would have […]

Silver Screen Suppers – Vincent Price’s Scotch Shortbread

Film archivist and food lover Jenny Hammerton suggests the perfect dish to accompany your screening of a Hollywood classic. Simply follow the recipe to enjoy a dinner with a twist and dine like a star.     Vincent Price was the absolute indisputable Master of Menace, playing some of the scariest and most sinister villains of the Golden Age of Hollywood.  But did you know, he wrote several excellent cookbooks too?   Vincent loved to eat, he loved to cook, and most of all he loved to share food with friends and family.  The cookbook he wrote with his wife Mary, A Treasury of Great Recipes, published in 1965, has become a cult “must-have” book for foodies all around the world.  A first edition copy of this much sought after tome would currently set you back around £450, but fear not, a 50th anniversary edition will be available in early November.  Put it on your Christmas list!  Alternatively, I’m running a fun Cookalong with a chance to win a copy of the 50th Anniversary Edition of the Treasury (RRP £32) – all you have to do is cook a dish from the book and blog about it – recipes are provided, details […]

Silver Screen Suppers – Peanut Butter Conspiracy Cookies

Film archivist and food lover Jenny Hammerton suggests the perfect dish to accompany your screening of a Hollywood classic. Simply follow the recipe to enjoy a dinner with a twist and dine like a star.   Singers & Swingers in the Kitchen is a fab and groovy cookbook. Published at the height of the Swinging Sixties in 1967, the book shares the favourite recipes of “the grooviest gourmets happening”. Within its pages are the signature dishes of Sonny & Cher, members of The Byrds, The Rolling Stones and The Monkees. We learn that Barbra Streisand loved to rustle up coffee ice-cream, Jane Fonda invented a dish called Chicken a la Kiki and the Mamas and the Papas loved Chilli Esperanza with scrambled egg. The recipes were collected by Roberta Ashley, the “teenage columnist” for This Week Magazine and the language she uses throughout reflects the fact that she’s writing for a young readership. “They’re hip, mod, delicious recipes from today’s top scene-makers – and guaranteed to turn on taste buds everywhere!” she announces. When I read about a band called the Peanut Butter Conspiracy I was intrigued. Peanut butter is always a turn on for my taste buds and I […]

Silver Screen Suppers – Mary Astor’s Celery Crisps

Film archivist and food lover Jenny Hammerton suggests the perfect dish to accompany your screening of a Hollywood classic. Simply follow the recipe to enjoy a dinner with a twist and dine like a star.   In 1927 an announcement was made by Photoplay Magazine’s Department of Personal Service.  Resident agony aunt Carolyn Van Wyck had taken some time out from giving friendly advice on the many and varied problems of the flappers of the day, to write a cook book.   The no-nonsense Carolyn had gathered together the favourite recipes of 100 of the magazine’s most admired movie stars for the delight and delectation of film fans.  It was pitched as an “invaluable aid to the girl who likes to give parties” and was available mail order for the princely sum of 25 cents.  In today’s money that’s about £2.50 – what a bargain for a book that contained recipes by megastars such as Gloria Swanson, Greta Garbo and Joan Crawford.  If you would like to score a copy today, there’s one on ebay as I write for £30.  This later edition of the cookbook contains 150 recipes, so would have been even better value for money at 25 cents back in the roaring […]

Silver Screen Suppers – Mariposa’s Canapes D’Amour

Film archivist and food lover Jenny Hammerton suggests the perfect dish to accompany your screening of a Hollywood classic. Simply follow the recipe to enjoy a dinner with a twist and dine like a star.   Since the earliest days of the movies, mere mortals have looked towards the icons of Hollywood for guidance on healthy eating.  Film stars were regularly asked for their favourite recipes by newspapers, magazines and cookbook compilers from the late 1910s onwards.  Many of the dishes actors and actresses proposed were soups and salads, focusing on eating fresh food and staying slim for the movie cameras and the klieg lights. Capitalizing on this trend, a fabulous cookbook entitled Hollywood Glamour Cook Book was published in 1940, promising “A Thousand Ways to Make Yourself Beautiful”.  Written by the mysterious Mariposa, the book is a treasure trove of advice on food combining techniques, the health benefits of herbs, and weekly menus proposed for each sign of the zodiac.  It is a weird and wonderful book.     Here’s Mariposa’s philosophy in a nutshell: Let’s glamorize the streamline way Like movie stars of fame today, With herbs and meals combined aright And vitamins in every bite.   As February […]
