KIN 2015: A Conference by The Vegetarian Society

Meat-Free Monday is all about taking one small step for our planet and KIN 2015 is all about how those steps can help the planet, animals and people.   KIN 2015 is a feast of ideas packed into a day, and tickets cost just £20. Lynne Elliot, Chief Executive, the Vegetarian Society said, “If you enjoy TED talks then KIN2015 is just right for you. KIN is about sparky conversations, fascinating facts and new ways to think. The theme is food choices and we’ve all got a point of view. KIN isn’t a family fun day – it’s a fact day – it’s about animal welfare, the environment, the planet, food and our choices. It’s time to dive into new ideas, trigger thoughts and get those grey cells working. So if Meat-Free Monday has made you take one small step, take another and head to kin.vegsoc.org/2015.”   The Vegetarian Society’s KIN 2015 is being held in Manchester on Saturday 11 July 2015.  It’s about the food choices we make – the food we eat, the way it’s produced and the impacts on our health, animals and our planet. A selection of the world’s leading thinkers and experts will be coming together […]

Alexander McQueen Savage Beauty – Review

British fashion designer Alexander McQueen was hailed as one of the most innovative designers of recent times, but a new highly anticipated V&A exhibition in celebration of his lifework, Savage Beauty, sadly doesn’t always succeed in showing or explaining why McQueen’s work mattered. The exhibition, which was first seen in New York four years ago, starts with a London section (an added addition not included in the New York exhibition), which features garments from some of McQueen’s first shows such as The Birds (1995) and The Hunger (1996). A large quote from McQueen inscribed on the wall states: “London’s where I was brought up. It’s where my heart is and where I get my inspiration.”     The thinking behind this section, one presumes, was to show how the city was rooted in McQueen’s work. But it doesn’t quite work. Apart from the quote and a voiceover from McQueen, who committed suicide aged 40 five years ago, proclaiming his love for London, and his ideas on beauty, there is very little in the way of explanation about how the capital and McQueen’s early years influenced his work. McQueen was born into a working class family; his dad was a taxi […]
