This is the ultimate easy-to-make crochet project – a fabulous, brightly coloured, enormous granny square, finished with a great fun border. It is a perfect blanket and you will have it for years and years, be it as a picnic blanket, a baby blanket, a throw for the sofa, a bedspread or an essential camping companion, which is what I use this one as! I’ve used a hardwearing merino yarn that you don’t need to worry about being used and abused – it can take it!

Granny square blankets are traditionally made up of leftover scraps of yarn – hence their garishness – and I have given a nod to that tradition here. I bought a few colours first and when I went back to buy more, I could no longer get hold of a couple of shades, so you will see that there are two reds and a cream and a white. I wanted to show that precise colours really don’t matter; the blanket looks absolutely amazing and a little bit of imperfection makes it all the more perfect!
Using A, ch6, join with a sl st to form a ring.
Round 1: Ch3 (counts as 1 tr), 2tr into ring, *ch2, 3tr into ring; rep from * twice more finishing with a ch2, join with a sl st to top of first ch 3, fasten off.
Round 2: Join B to any ch 2 space, ch3 (counts as 1 tr), (2tr, ch2, 3tr) into same ch 2 space, ch1, *(3tr, ch2, 3tr) into foll ch 2 space work, ch1; rep from * twice more, after fi nal ch1 join rnd with a sl st to top of ch 3, fasten off.
Round 3: Join C to any ch 2 space, ch3 (counts as 1 tr), (2tr, ch2, 3tr) into same ch 2 space, *ch1, 3tr into next ch 1 space, ch1, (3tr, ch2, 3tr) into next ch 2 space; rep from * twice more to final corner, work 3tr into fi nal ch 1 space, ch1, join with a sl st to top of ch 3, fasten off.
Round 4: Join D1 to any ch 2 space, ch3 (counts as 1 tr), (2tr, ch2, 3tr) into same ch 2 space, *(ch1, 3tr) into next two ch 1 spaces, ch1, (3tr, ch2, 3tr) into next ch 2 space; rep from * twice more, after final corner space, (ch1, 3tr) into each of final two ch 1 spaces, ch1, join the round with a sl st to top of ch 3.
Round 5 and beyond: Rep row 4 using E. As the blanket grows, there will be more ch 1 side spaces and cont working 3tr into each of these, separated by a ch1. In each of the four corner spaces work (3tr, ch2, 3tr). Change colour every round in the sequence A, B, C, D, E, switching from D1 to D2 when necessary.
Round 1: Join F1 to any ch 2 corner space, work one ordinary granny square row, as above, do not fasten off, do not turn.
Round 2: Ch1, 1dc into same place, 1dc into each of next 2 sts, into ch 2 space work (2dc, ch2, 2dc), cont working a dc round by working 1dc into each tr, 1dc into each ch 1 space and into each
ch 2 corner space work (2dc, ch2, 2dc), finishing rnd by joining with a sl st to top of fi rst dc, do not turn.
Round 3: Ch1, 1dc into same place, 1dc into each of next 4 sts, into ch 2 corner space work (2dc, ch2, 2dc), cont around, working 1dc into every st and (2dc, ch2, 2dc) into each corner space, join rnd with a sl st to top of first dc, fasten off yarn, do not turn.
Round 4 (picot fan): Join F2 to any ch 2 corner space, ch6 (counts as 1 tr, ch 3), [1tr, ch3] 3 more times into same ch 2 corner space, 1tr into same ch 2 corner space to finish fan, miss 2 sts, 1dc into foll st, *miss 3 sts, (1tr, ch3) into foll st 5 times, finish with 1tr into same st, miss 3 sts, 1dc into foll st; rep from * around blanket.
You should be working the last fan before every corner in about the 6th st before the ch 2 corner space: work the fan in this st, miss 3 sts, 1dc into next st, miss 1 st then work the corner fan, after the corner fan miss 1 st, 1dc into foll st and then rep from * to next corner. However, do not worry if this is not exactly the case! If the fan is worked in the 8th st before the corner, just make sure you miss 3 sts and make 1 dc into next st. If after this you have more or fewer than 1 st before the corner space, it will not show in the finished blanket. Finish rnd with last dc before corner, sl st into 3rd ch of ch 6, fasten off yarn.
TO MAKE UP
Weave in ends.
Press the blanket.
No colour change
If you do not want to change colour every round, you need to sl st into each of next 3tr and into the ch 2 space, then work as instructed. You must move to next space along as every round starts in a space.
