Laura Hunter lives in a rainbow-hued world, complete with iridescent flowers, shiny cats and glittery treasures. We caught up with the Disney loving jewellery maker, entrepreneur and all round lovely lady to find out how her passion for fairy tales and all things crafty, have served as inspiration.
1. What was the first piece of jewellery you ever made?
It was a necklace for a Christmas present to my sister. It had a bird that could move around the chain and a tree so it looked like it was flying away. She loved it so much she suggested I sell them! I guess I owe her a lot of necklaces since then!
2. Tell us about your typical working day.
My typical day works around my daughter and how many naps she takes! I tend to start the working day with coffee, replying to emails then making and packing up orders. In the afternoon I might pop out for more coffee and sketch some designs but I work best at night really, it’s when I have my best ideas!
3. How do you balance family life with your business?
It’s really tricky and something I think everyone struggles with but I’ve recently come to the conclusion that you can only fit so much into a day when looking after a baby, so I make my to-do lists much smaller day to day. That way I don’t have a long list of things I didn’t do and feel guilty about. You have to give yourself a break, look after yourself and family, and focus on what your business really needs. I LOVE my business, it’s my passion and hobby so it’s super easy to get over excited and carried away with it. Since having my daughter I’ve chilled out more, learnt how to say no to things (which is REALLY hard to do) and focus on the things that make my business special. I’m still learning to balance the two every day, but I’m pretty happy with it all at the mo. I read somewhere that you can have it all, just not all at the same time and it’s so true!
4. What 5 things can’t you live without?
Radio 6 Music, coffee, The Simpsons, my sketch book and my laptop.
5. Which has been the biggest I love Crafty highlight for you so far?
Ooooh thats a tough question! I’ve had 2 customers get tattoos of some of my mermaid designs which I thought was pretty amazing! In general it’s hearing from my customers and making friends and relationships with them, nothing feels better than happy customers!
6. What feelings, subjects or concepts inspire you as an artist?
I’m pretty inspired by my childhood obsessions, so my first jewellery collection was inspired by my love for the Disney film, ‘The Little Mermaid’ which I watched EVERYDAY as a kid! I’m also inspired by kitsch objects, pastel colours and day dreams. Feelings-wise, I’m inspired by fun and good vibes! I’m a positive person and I think that comes out in my designs.
7. Fairy tales and Disney feature heavily in your work. Which Disney/Fairy tale character are you most like?
I’d say I’m a mix between Tiana from “The Princess and the Frog” and Alice from “Alice in Wonderland.” Tiana works hard for her dream and I remember watching it (as an adult) and thinking “yes, this girl is awesome.” I listen to the soundtrack a lot when working. And I’ve always loved Alice since I was a kid, I love her dreamy and curious nature, I’ve definitely got some of that in me!
8. What’s your ultimate ambition as an artist/designer?
I have lots of things I’d like to accomplish but working with Disney in some way would BLOW MY MIND!!!!
9. What items of jewellery are you wearing right now?
My Vivienne Westwood engagement ring and simple silver wedding band. It’s a sleepy day today, and I’ve learnt that wearing jewellery around a baby isn’t worth the pain!
10. What advice would you give to aspiring crafters wanting to start their own businesses?
Love what you do and believe in it. Be yourself. Don’t compare your start with someone else’s middle. Be inspired but NEVER copy. Be focused, enthusiastic and excited everyday. Little sound bites, but if you can take them to heart then you’ll have a good start to your business.
